What is a Hyperbaric chamber?
Definition: A specialized enclosure where air pressure is increased two to three times normal atmospheric pressure which ncreases the amount of oxygen dissolved in your blood plasma to accelerate healing and stimulate new blood vessel growth.
Can I bring my phone into a hyperbaric chamber?
No, you cannot bring your phone into a standard or medical hyperbaric chamber. Cell phones contain lithium-ion batteries that can spark, overheat, or fail under pressure, creating a severe fire hazard in the oxygen-rich environment
What medical conditions can be treated with HBOT?
There are 14 indications that are approved to be treated by the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Committee:
- Air or gas embolism – when gas bubbles enter arteries or veins
- Carbon monoxide poisoning – when carbon monoxide is inhaled and injuries arise from that
- Clostridial myositis and myonecrosis – a rapidly progressive infection of the soft tissue, known commonly as “gas gangrene”
- Crush injury, compartment syndrome, and other acute traumatic ischemias – injuries that result from trauma, from minor contusions to limb threatening damage
- Decompression sickness – referred to as the “bends,” is the formation of inert gas bubbles in tissue, usually caused by rapid ascent from a dive.
- Arterial insufficiencies – wounds that are not healing properly
- Severe anemia – a loss of red blood cell mass due to hemorrhage, hemolysis, or aplasia
- Intracranial abscess – an inflammation caused from infected material coming from local or remote infectious sources
- Necrotizing soft tissue infections – a rare but severe type of bacterial infection that can cause tissue death
- Osteomyelitis – an infection of bone or bone marrow
- Delayed radiation injury (soft tissue and bony necrosis) – some radiation treatments leave patients with cell damage to soft tissue (such as mouth, throat, and the gastrointestinal tract).
- Compromised grafts and flaps – when a skin graft does not heal properly
- Acute thermal burn injury – severe burns that can be treated with enhanced oxygen
- Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss – hearing loss caused by a malfunction in a certain nerve in the brain
Is HBOT safe?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is generally safe when performed in a supervised facility for approved conditions. Most side effects are mild, such as ear pressure or temporary vision changes. Serious risks like lung damage or seizures are rare, but fire hazards and improper use can make treatments dangerous. Safety is always our first priority.
What is the difference between "Recovery" 1.5ATA and "Medical" 2.0ATA HBOT?
- Pressure: Low pressure, often called mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT).
- Equipment: Usually flexible or soft-sided inflatable shells.
- Gas Used: Generally pressurized with ambient room air or lightly oxygen-enriched air.
- Purpose: General fitness, relaxation, athletic recovery, and mild fatigue or sleep support.
- Supervision: Used in wellness centers, spas, or at home with no medical prescription required.
- Pressure: High clinical pressure required to force high volumes of oxygen directly into the blood plasma.
- Equipment: Rigid, hard-shell chambers made of steel or heavy acrylic.
- Gas Used: Patient breathes 100% medical-grade oxygen via a mask or hood inside a pressurized environment.
- Purpose: Treating approved medical conditions like non-healing wounds, carbon monoxide poisoning, severe infections, and radiation tissue injury.
